Unity Spiritual Center proudly announces the appointment of Rev. Dr. Richard Loren Held as its new Senior Minister, effective Nov. 11, 2024. Known for his thought-provoking, soul-nudging teachings, Rev. Held brings decades of experience in spiritual leadership, community building, and a passion for inclusive and restorative work in religious spaces.
Rev. Held first discovered USC during a time of personal and professional reflection in Seattle, Washington. "In my better moments, I’ve grown to trust – even to welcome – the gifts of discomfort," he reflects. After over a decade of senior leadership in Seattle, Rev. Held began to explore new possibilities, leading him to discover Unity Spiritual Center, a community that resonated deeply with his values as a spiritual teacher and interpreter.
What initially attracted Rev. Held to USC was the depth of study and practice he witnessed within the community. "It's my belief that our wisdom teachings demand more from us," he says, emphasizing the importance of inner work and genuine transformation over mere platitudes. "I witnessed people willing to do some inner work, willing to be made new. And I like that."
Rev. Held's love for spiritual conversation and his belief in the power of religious institutions to introduce positive change fueled his decision to apply for the senior minister position at USC. "In whatever ways the institution of religion has facilitated harm in our world, it is also best poised to introduce correction," he states. Rev. Held looks forward to leading the USC community in a restorative work that embraces inclusivity, diversity, and the highest forms of love.
Though relocating from Seattle to Ohio was a secondary consideration, Rev. Held's commitment to honoring his inner guidance led him on an unforgettable road trip across the country. "When we break from that tribal mind, thrust ourselves into the family of life, and rehumanize each other, we remember that what appears to separate us pales in comparison to what truly unites us," he reflects on the journey, which bolstered his faith in humanity.
Rev.. Held expresses enthusiasm for the welcoming spirit of the Midwest and its openness to reinventing relationships with spiritual teachings. "I love the Midwest – its kindnesses, comforts, and willingness to explore new, affirming spiritual relationships," he says. He is eager to immerse himself in the vibrant Cleveland community, enjoying its rich cultural offerings and culinary delights.
Rev. Dr. Richard Loren Held holds multiple degrees, including a Doctor of Divinity degree. He is a published author and an award-winning businessman who served as Senior Minister for Unity in Lynnwood, Washington, until 2024.
Known for his profound yet accessible teachings, Rev. Held has collaborated with spiritual luminaries including Marianne Williamson, Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Jean Houston and the Dalai Lama. He is a passionate spiritualist, educator, and musician who enjoys modern architecture, classic cars, and spending time with his partner, Matthew Wilson, and their beloved dog, Hugo.
Rev. Held looks forward to embarking on this new life chapter with Unity Spiritual Center Westlake, guiding the community with warmth, wisdom, and a renewed sense of purpose.
